How to tell if my dog is cold?

Before we had Skippy, our Coton De Tulear, we had Charlie the Chihuahua. He sadly crossed the rainbow bridge in 2021 at the age of 14. Charlie was a big Chihuahua compared to most. He was always strong and pretty solid but he would shake, shake like a leaf but not always for the same reason.

I believe anxiety caused his shivering as well, especially when we paid a visit to the vet. Of course, just pure excitement would trigger it too, like seeing another dog, his favorite mail delivery person or anticipating a car ride. Then there are those big head shakes which of course are different from the shivers and one interesting fact I learned from our Vet was that dogs will shake side to side to release tension. I didn’t know this!

But what I’m talking about are tiny tremors or trembling from being cold.  When we were home, in our back yard or on walks in the cooler months, he would often shake from being cold. Some dog breeds are more prone to feeling cold and have a harder time keeping warm due to their size, coat type, or body structure. These breeds often require extra care in cold weather.

Here are a few examples:

Chihuahuas, Greyhounds and Whippets, Italian Greyhounds, Dachshunds, Chinese Crested, Miniature Pinschers, Bulldogs and Boston Terriers.

These above breeds have very short coats and little body fat to help them maintain their body temperature.

Some breeds with longer coats may also need help to keep warm because they are closer to the ground and especially if their fur has been clipped short.

These smaller breeds include Maltese, Pomeranians, Yorkshire Terriers and Shih Tzus to just name a few. If your outdoorsy with your big breed pup, they’re going to need some protection too!

OK, so how to keep small dog breeds or dog breeds with short coats warm?

5. Dog Pajamas

Dog Pajamas: If your home is colder than most other homes in the winter months, then PJs for dogs could be a great idea. Just keep in mind, if your pup snuggles in bed with you, getting over-heated is a possibility. Use your judgement! Frisco Fairisle Cozy Plush Fleece Dog & Cat PJs, Green

6. Dog Scarves, Snoods or Bandeau Scarves

Dog Scarves, Snoods or Bandeau Scarves: I couldn’t get my pups to cover their ears with snoods and scarves may untie and become a hazard but bandeau or infinity scarves sized for dogs have been a game-changer. We recently added a couple to our collection and have re-stocked them multiple times. Aztec Bandeau Dog Scarf

7. Dog Vests

Dog Vests are a great option if a Parka or full on coat for your pup feels a bit much. Often times, you can grab a sherpa vest with reflective bands or patches.

What household items are available to keep your dog warm?

  1. Thermal Dog Blankets: Sherpa or fur blankets work well to keep the warmth within the blanket from your pup’s own body heat.

  2. Heated Dog Beds and Mats: This is a great option for road trips or if your home is colder in winter months K&H Thermo-Pet Cuddle Cushion

  3. Cozy Cave Beds: We had the above bed for Charlie our Chihuahua and he loved it. If he was cold he’d sleep inside and when he was too warm he slept on top of the cover. It’s washable! Snoozer Pet Products Poly Cotton Rectangle Cozy Cave

Also important to mention, we cannot ignore the medical reasons why dogs may shake possibly stemming from pain, neurological issues or medication side effects as some possible causes, which should be brought to your Vet’s attention.
